About SwimLean Our Story

The people behind 124,000+ fat-loss results — and the science that started it all.

SwimLean began in a 25-yard pool in Birmingham and a question two founders couldn't stop asking: why does no one teach adults to swim for fat loss? Eleven years later, it's a method, a research collaboration, and a 23-person care team.

The Founders

Two perspectives, one method — a national-team swimmer and an exercise physiologist who refused to choose between the pool and the lab.

SwimLean is not a content brand, an app, or a course library. It is a clinically framed aquatic protocol — co-built by someone who raced at the elite level and someone who has spent her career measuring what the body actually does in the water.

Kate Voss

Co-founder · Former national-team swimmer · Head of Method

Kate swam competitively for 18 years, including four seasons with the British national squad. After retiring from racing, she spent a decade coaching adults who wanted to lose weight without the joint damage she'd seen derail other athletes. She co-founded SwimLean in 2014 to turn that coaching practice into a scalable protocol.

Helena holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Birmingham and has authored 14 peer-reviewed papers on aquatic training and adult metabolic adaptation. Her lab work — repeated across three university collaborations — is the evidence base underneath every SwimLean protocol.

The Origin Story

Why a 25-yard pool in Birmingham, and why not running or HIIT?

In 2013, Kate Voss was coaching a 52-year-old client through her third failed attempt at losing 30 pounds. She'd tried running (left knee), bootcamp (lower back), and calorie restriction (energy crash). Kate kept returning to one observation: in the water, her client could move hard for 45 minutes without pain, and her resting heart rate recovered in a way that didn't happen on land.

She brought the question to Dr. Helena Marsh at the University of Birmingham: could a structured aquatic protocol actually match the fat-oxidation rates of high-intensity land training — without the orthopedic cost? Helena's lab ran three years of comparative trials on adults aged 35–68, measuring subcutaneous fat loss, VO2 adaptation, and joint-loading markers against matched running and HIIT cohorts.

The result — published across 14 peer-reviewed papers between 2016 and 2025 — is the SwimLean method: 45-minute pool sessions engineered to keep heart rate in the 65–80% max range for the majority of the work, paired with breath-controlled drills that maximise lipolysis without the cortisol spike of high-intensity intervals. It's not about swimming faster. It's about swimming specifically for fat loss, in a way the body can sustain for 12 weeks and beyond.

That research collaboration is still active. Every protocol update we ship passes through the same Birmingham lab review pipeline it started in.
